Chickens AnonymousWhen I first brought up the possibility of permitting homeowners to keep up to four chickens in their back yards, the response was instantaneous. Some people were (and still are) very wary of the whole idea and others are completely supportive and excited. Most people who are concerned about food security and the eating local movement think it is a wonderful idea. The other group that is excited is composed of the chickens themselves, if the number of anonymous postcards is to be believed. Since this idea came to light, I have received seven postcards, purportedly from poultry...some female chickens, a Siclian and presumably Mafia rooster, white supremist chickens - the wyandottes, who do not want lower class chickens such as leghorns to be allowed. These postcards have given me a great deal of pleasure, and I will be entering them as part of the public record when the open houses happen around the new zoning bylaws in the City of Duncan.
